As a design consultant for J Paul Studio, I have the privilege of consulting clientele in the intimate setting of their home. It is a joy to discuss window treatment options for different spaces in the home. Solar Shades are utilitarian, not really meant to have a design voice, they just manage the light. A Roman Shade can immediately add life to an otherwise bland elevation/space. Curtains add style, sophistication and in the appropriate scheme they are the absolute star of the show, complimenting a space with elegance and character.
Controls are my favorite topic to discuss.
A manually operated treatment is low maintenance, they are tried and true. Motorization brings convenience, bringing technology into a space allowing you to press a button, speak or automate commands. The power source varies from Line Voltage, Low voltage to Battery which can last 5 years before needing any attention.
I once read that “Without enough sleep we all become tall two-year-olds” so the matter of light management in sleeping quarters is a serious one.
The term “blackout” is used very loosely in our industry. When the request is made for “blackout” shades, making a strong effort not to be snobby, I politely substitute the word “blackout“ with the phrase “room darkening“. Often the request for “blackout” by a client isn’t a need for hotel-room, deep space black but a need for an opaque material covering the windows. An opaque fabric cannot achieve complete “blackout” in a room on its own, also required are side channels a head box and other accessories depending on the shape of the window opening.
